"Surprise" Gov. Spitzer with Message of Rockefeller Reform

Last Friday, a coalition of advocates, people
formerly incarcerated under the Rockefeller Drug Laws, their family
members and supporters threw a "surprise" birthday party for New York
Governor Eliot Spitzer to celebrate his campaign promises to reform the
Rockefeller Drug Laws--and to remind him that so far, he's done nothing

More than 100 people attended Friday's party, held outside Gov.
Spitzer's New York City office. Advocates and family members spoke out
about the injustices of the draconian drug laws, and attendees
distributed information on real Rockefeller reform. At the end of the
event, a giant birthday cake was cut and distributed to the crowd, and a
large birthday card--signed by event attendees--was delivered to Gov.
Spitzer’s office. The party was covered by print, radio and television
news media.
The Rockefeller Drug Laws impose extremely harsh sentences for
nonviolent drug crimes. A bill to reform the laws, A.6663, passed the
New York State Assembly earlier this year, but now languishes in the
Senate. Blood Analysis Drug Test The proposed reforms would expand drug treatment diversion
options for people incarcerated for nonviolent drug possession; increase
funding for community-based drug treatment and harm reduction programs;
expand judicial discretion and curtail the use of mandatory minimums;
allow people serving time for B, C, and D Rockefeller Drug Law felonies
to apply for resentencing; and require the New York State Comptroller to
monitor, annually, the savings accrued from providing more treatment
instead of incarceration.
DPA helped organize the party. Naoma Nagawahatte, deputy director of
DPA's state organizing and policy project, declared the action a huge
success. "We made our point. We had powerful speakers, noisemakers,
signs, and the energy needed to win the real reforms demanded by New
Yorkers. We intend to hold Governor Spitzer to his word."
