New York residents will have the
opportunity to share their ideas and thoughts about the draconian
Rockefeller Drug Laws when the New York State Sentencing Reform
Commission holds public hearings later this month. The hearings, which
will be held in New York City, Albany, and Buffalo, were announced
shortly after the Commission released its preliminary report.
Unfortunately, the report contained almost no concrete
recommendations regarding the 34-year-old Rockefeller Drug Laws, which
are widely regarded as ineffective, wasteful, and racist.
In March 2007, New York Governor Elliot Spitzer created the New York
State Sentencing Reform Commission, and directed the Commission to make
recommendations to reform New York’s Byzantine sentencing system.
Advocates for Rockefeller Drug Law reform submitted testimony to the
Commission and monitored its work to ensure that meaningful
recommendations regarding Rockefeller Drug Law reform were included
in the preliminary report. However, the Commission gave only cursory
