Three major pharmacy chains and nearly fifty independent pharmacies can now provide syringes to adults without a prescription in Los Angeles County -- a significant leap forward for harm reduction efforts in the Los Angeles area.

The pharmacies are enrolled in the lifesaving Disease Prevention Demonstration Project (DPDP), which makes clean syringes available for purchase in pharmacies in order to reduce the spread of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C.

The Drug Policy Alliance, which leads implementation of the program in L.A. County, just enrolled the Longs Drug Stores chain, making a total of nearly 300 participating pharmacies in the County.

With an estimated 3,500 people in Los Angeles currently living with HIV/AIDS because of sharing syringes, and nearly 200,000 living with hepatitis C, DPA’s harm reduction efforts are key to the health and safety of tens of thousands of Angelenos who use injection drugs.

Los Angeles area DPDP pharmacists strongly support the program, reporting anywhere from "a few" to "hundreds" of syringe users utilizing the program over the past year without incident.

In order to increase public safety along with access to sterile syringes, DPA recently worked with the City of L.A. Public Works Department to establish a program to deliver free sharps containers to DPDP pharmacies for their syringe-using clients. This program will further reduce the number of improperly discarded syringes throughout the County.

DPA is a leading and active force in Los Angeles on the syringe disposal issue and remains committed to ensuring that the issue of improper syringe disposal never becomes a barrier to syringe access in Los Angeles.
