On June 7, the Drug Policy Alliance joined A New PATH
(Parents for Addiction Treatment and Healing), San Diego City College, and
University of California at San Diego to present An Inch From the Heart,
a showcase of art in celebration of recovery from alcohol and drug addiction at
the San Diego Art Institute.
An Inch From the Heart was created when students
from San Diego City College and UCSD interviewed individuals in recovery from
drug addiction, many of whom are members of the Prop. 36 Alumni Association.
Student interviewers and recovery advocates displayed the creations of art,
poetry and books that evolved from the interviews. The evening also included a
ceremony of recognition for all the individuals who have successfully completed
a treatment program under Proposition 36.
More than 300 people attended the event, which was part
of a campaign to educate the public that addiction is a treatable disease,
reduce obstacles to long-term recovery, explore options for expanding
Proposition 36 (treatment not incarceration) success, and celebrate the stories
of individuals who made the journey from addiction into recovery.
An Inch From The Heart, a project of A New PATH,
was co-sponsored by A New PATH, The Drug Policy Alliance, The Proposition 36
Alumni Association, Realize Creative Social Action, and Alliance Healthcare
Foundation.
