A False Positive Drug Test is when a
drug free sample of urine, blood, hair or saliva is falsely reported as showing
positive for a specific drug or specific drugs.
With many employers making use of random drug testing in the work place,
employees sometimes wonder about the possibility of registering a false positive
on a drug test. The fact is there are a number of different over the counter
medications, foods, vitamin supplements and even prescription medicines that can
cause a false positive on a drug test.
A False Positive Drug Test Should Be Really Intimidating And It Could Happen
To You!
Hair and urine testing is highly susceptible to false positive drug testing to
the point that some experts call such testing "junk science". People with
dark skin are particularly susceptible to false drug testing results when
exposure to second hand marijuana or cocaine smoke can be absorbed into their
hair.
The chances of you getting a false positive depends on the quality of the
laboratory that does the testing. There seems to be about 1,200 of these
labs in the United States. Less than a 100 of these meet federal standards
and most of the individual states do not regulate drug test labs. The number
of false positives returned range from 4% to over 10%.
A false positive drug test can occur for a number of reasons including: improper
laboratory procedure, mixing up samples, incorrect paperwork and passive
inhalation (second hand smoke). But the most common cause of false positive drug
test s are cross reactants. This is a substance which because of its similar
structure to a drug or its metabolite can cause a false positive drug test
result.
Over-The-Counter Medications
- Among over the counter medicines, many of the night-time cold medications
people use to minimize cold and flu symptoms for the evening can cause false
positives. This is particularly true of the liquid cold relievers, as many of
them contain various members of the ephedrine family. Some of the weight loss
products also can result in registering a false positive when testing for drugs
is conducted. Even some nasal sprays and over the counter asthma products can
create a false positive on a drug test.
Foods - Foods can sometimes
bring back a false positive on a drug test. Many people are familiar with the
fact that poppy seeds can throw off the results on drug tests by showing up as
an opiate. Poppy seeds are often used in salad dressings, as an ingredient in
many casseroles, and as an added topping on buns and rolls.
Vitamins - Vitamin supplements
can sometimes lead to a false positive on a drug test. Riboflavin, also known as
B2 can return a false THC reading. Along with being part of most B complex
vitamin supplements, the riboflavin is found in hempseed oil and also as a stand
alone supplement. Many herbs that contain moderate to high amounts of B vitamins
may also bring back a false positive when testing for drugs is taking place.
Prescription Medications -
Prescription medications can also register a false positive on a drug test.
Antibiotics like ampicillin and amoxicillin are prime examples. A number of
prescription pain medications may return a false positive. Even some
anti-anxiety medications will show up as an indicator of one type of illegal
drug or another.
Diseases -
Some diseases can also lead to a false positive on a drug test.
Conditions such as diabetes, liver disease, and kidney infections may register
as opiates on drug tests. When preparing for a drug test, it is a good idea to
provide a list of any medications taken recently, as well as vitamins and any
herbal supplements. If the individual undergoing the drug test has an ongoing
medical condition, that information should be provided also. This can make a
huge difference in evaluating the final results of the drug test.
What Can You To Reduce The Chance Of Or Deal With Of A False Positive
Drug Test.
There are literally hundreds of brand name and generic drugs being prescribed
today. If you have a question on a specific prescribed medication, you will need
to know the general classification of that medication to determine if it will
test positive on any of the specific drug test panels, ie: opiates, amphetamine,
methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, barbiturates etc.
-
Research what
medication you take that can give you a false positive drug
test. Even some of the most common medications can make your
drug test positive. Medications such as Dexatrim, Advil, and
Aleve are drugs that read positive for THC and Ecstasy. Try to
skip any over -the-counter medication for at least 72 hours
before your drug test.
-
Talk with your doctor
before taking your drug test. Fill out a detailed medication
list of all over-the-counter and prescription medications before
your test. This way they should know that your positive result
is because of your medication and not due to illegal drugs.
Watch what you eat. Certain foods can deliver a positive reading
on your drug test. If you eat anything with poppy seeds, such as
bagels and muffins, change your dietary habits temporarily to
get a more favorable test result. Eat plain bagels or blueberry
muffins until after your drug test.
-
TEST YOURSELF FIRST TO
SEE IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE AT RISK. For more information or to
purchase a discount, please see
Home Drug
Test Kits.
-
Ask for a different
type of drug test if you've gotten multiple false positive
results. Talk with them about any food or medication you've had
and forgotten to mention. Any of those items could have
influenced your test results.
-
Discuss your results
with your doctor and look into why your test results came back
positive when you don't take drugs. Some times the testers use
gas chromatography or mass spectrometry to get in-depth results
of your sample by breaking down its components differently. Once
those results come back, you'll know for certain your true drug
test results regardless of the outcome.
